Picture-House NY Gaining Steam

This year’s annual picture buyer fair  in New York City broke records for vendor participation and buyer attendance.  The eight-year old event, run by PictureHouse Marketing US, LLC, took place on October 29th at the Altman Building in Chelsea and attracted over 100 stock photo companies.  Most importantly, the number of stock photo users and buyers exceeded 850, a nearly 25% increase from the previous year with more ad-agency personnel as opposed to editorial buyers in the mix.
Deborah Free, President of PictureHouse Marketing, who puts on the event, says the move uptown from the Puck Building in SoHo (last year’s venue) to Chelsea might have helped attract more buyers.  She also believes the event itself is gaining momentum as more of the advertising and design community in NYC becomes aware of it.  Comments from participating vendors back her up.  "We have now been attending the New York Picture-House event for 5 years and every year Deborah manages to get new and interesting image buyers through the doors." said Ute Krebs of akg images in a comment typical of those made by many vendors at the event.  She added, "This year was the best event yet, the venue was packed throughout the day and we made many new contacts we will follow up!"The crowd of buyers attending the event was comprised of  32% advertising and design personnel, 19% from magazines & newspapers, 17% from the book publishing industry and 32%, new media, merchandise, travel, and other sectors.  Comments from attendees indicate they were well pleased with the show, also.  Chloe Magner of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance put it this way: "I liked the availability of every agency and every connection in one place - mission accomplished in that sense. Perhaps this is because of the exclusivity of the event in that it was just professionals—buyers and agencies, and no one else. It brought about an intimacy that made the event much more fun and relaxed and even though I’d never been previously, I knew going into it that I would be among the best of the best."One complaint about the event this year was that the venue was too small.  Free says next year’s Picture House event in NY will be held in a much larger space right next door to the Altman Building, at the Metropolitan Pavilion.  Picture House NY 2009 will take place on October 14.  Mark your calendars!
