One of the most popular microstock agencies, iStockphoto is more than a photo seller, it's an active community of photographers and designers. Read on to find out how to submit your work to iStockphoto.

Getting accepted
Anyone can contribute images to iStockphoto, however, you must apply to submit each type of image format (image, flash, vector, video). After reading through iStockphoto's image requirements, you must take a short quiz. If you pass the quiz you may continue on to submit 3 sample images for review. In order to sell your work, you must upload a valid form of photo ID* (drivers license, passport, etc.) in the form of a JPG. *you do not have to provide ID during signup.

Image Requirements - Content

  • Creative and unusual images are desired, as are images of people in various activities, such as business, fashion, sports, etc.
  • Avoid over-shot subjects like pets, flowers, flags, feet, close-ups of eyes, out-of-window shots (airplane wings), brick walls, etc.
  • No logos, trademarks, patented designs, or artwork visible in your photos.
  • Model Releases are required, even for self-portraits of the photographer. A 3rd party witness signature is also required.
  • Artistic partial and full nudity is permitted. Obscene, pornographic, or explicit nudity is not allowed.

Image Requirements - Quality

  • Focus - images should be clear and well focused, unless using motion blur or soft focus for effect.
  • Lighting - proper lighting is of the utmost importance. Avoid reflections and harsh shadows caused by flash units or improper lighting.
  • Noise and Compression - images should be free of noise, compression artifacts or other distortion when viewed at 100% image size.
  • Filtering - Do not submit images that have been over-processed or over-filtered. Grayscale or sepia versions are ok. The more processing you do, the less usable it may become to designers.
  • Duplicates - do not submit multiple variations of the same image with only slight changes (angle, color, etc).

Image Specifications

  • Types: photos, illustrations.
  • File size: 1600x1200 pixels minimum (2MP). No up-sampled images.
  • File type: photos (JPG in RGB mode), Flash (zipped SWF or FLA), vector (zipped EPS or AI).

Web-based uploads or batch-upload via plugins for programs like Aperture and iPhoto

Approval Process

All submitted images are inspected by Approval Administrators. Images are added to an approval queue as they are submitted, and they are reviewed in turn.
