Basics of Using a Light Meter
Mark Wallace from Digital Photography One on One explains the basics of light meters and how to use them. Mark also makes a recommendation for what light meter to buy.
There are two types of metering: reflective light metering and incident light metering. Your camera uses reflective light metering, which uses an internal meter that measures the light reflected from your subject as it enters the camera lens.
Incident metering utilizes a standalone unit that reads light falling on the model or subject. For studio environments. Set the light meter and camera to the same shutter and ISO settings. When you take a reading from the light meter, it will tell you the correct aperture setting to use.
Recommended light meters:
Sekonic L-358 - in studio
Sekonic L-758 DR - outdoors or scenic work.
